The genesis of Sunshine Dairy Foods began in the mid 1930’s by a Greek restaurateur, John Karamanos, who started a dairy delivery service for his friends in Portland’s food industry. Karamanos wanted to deliver the best products with the highest quality service. At that time there were 50 independent dairy processors in the city. Today, Sunshine remains a fourth generation, family-owned, independently operated dairy processor with personalized delivery service for its customers in the Pacific Northwest. The company has built its business around producing the highest quality, best tasting dairy products. For fluid milk products, Sunshine uses a cold bowl separation process that may take longer, but results in superior products since the milk is only heated at the pasteurization step. The taste is clean and fresh, never over processed. Sunshine screens each load of milk for antibiotics and all Sunshine dairy products exceed federal standards for quality and food safety. Sunshine is also a certified organic producer with certifications from both Oregon Tilth and Organic Certifiers.
Sunshine believes that natural is better and sources milk from farmers who have pledged not to inject their cows with rBST or use cloned cows for milk production.All Sunshine milk products are packaged in recyclable opaque white jugs and paper cartons to protect the milk from light and prevent oxidation – so a glass of Sunshine milk has all of the nutrients and outstanding flavor customers have come to expect. The rBST-free commitment extends beyond Sunshine’s fluid milk, and includes its sour cream, cottage cheese, egg nog, yogurt, soft serve mix, and all-natural chocolate milk.
Sunshine uses a variety of suppliers and vendors with many long-term relationships that date back decades. Sunshine’s largest vendor is its milk supplier, Farmers Cooperative Creamery (“FCC”). FCC members are almost universally family farmers who manage small to mid-sized farms in the Willamette Valley, Oregon and Yakima Valley and Chehalis, Washington. Since the introduction of rBST in 1994, Sunshine has sought relationships with farmers who choose not to inject their cows with this artificial stimulant. Sunshine supports farmers’ sustainable farming choices for healthy cows, quality milk and environmentally responsible agriculture plans.
